Warning Levels of Radon

If you can’t see it, you can't smell it, or you can't taste it, then how is a home resident warned of dangerous radon levels penetrating into their home? The truth is, testing is the only wat to find out for sure if the home is enviornmentally unsafe with radon toxic gases. That is the only way to really know. Unfortunately, many people go years and even a lifetime living in a home that is infested with the element radon and dnever knew it. In many cases, lung cancer patients learn that their homes contain elevated radon measurements after a lung cancer diagnosis. Radon is a Class A carcinogen. Being the second cause of lung cancer world-wide, it is remarkable how many people in the U.S. and throughout the world have never even heard of it.  Yet, studies show Radon is responsible for more than 21,000 deaths from lung cancer every year. The  scary fact is one person every 25 minutes dies from radon-induced lung cancer.  In Florida, one in five homes tested was found to have elevated radon levels higher than EPA  action level of 4 pCi/L. Many people think that radon is only found in older run down homes. But, nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, elevated levels have been measured in every type of building.  Even manufactured homes, schools and high-rise condominiums have tested high for radon gas measurements.

We know through research that Radon derives from the the breakdown of radioactive radium which occurs naturally. It is found in almost every Florida soil. Clearwater soils do have radon in them. Concrete can have radon in it. When gas in the soil passes through openings in the soil, it can enter buildings. It does this by flowing through soils and then meeting up with a concrete foundation. It then enters through porous concrete through small openings in the foundation. A building can potentially hold gas of radon in it which is similar to smoke which is trapped under glass, these trapped indoor radon concentrations can and do increase to multiple times outdoor levels. To a minimum extent, air quality also is affected by carbon monoxide, otherwise known as CO, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particle pollution 10 (particulate matter 10 or PM10) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). These air quality levels are considered pollutants.  Check out Florida Spatial Air Quality System (SAQS) for more information considering Air quality control and observation.

What is the Air Quality like in Clearwater, Florida?

The way outdoor air is measured in Clearwater is something called Air Quality Index. It is simply a value that simplifies the CO, NO2, O3, particle pollution and SO2 concentrations. This indicator will estimate the air quality throughout Clearwater location. More information may be found on the Division's Air Quality Index webpage.
